Where will my lesson start and finish?

Your instructor will normally drive to your home, and the lesson will start from there. But if there is somewhere more convenient for you, then please tell us, and providing it is within our normal area we will do our best to fit in with your request.

Do you provide theory test training?

Yes we do – you can register with our partner site for a free taster, if you are one of our current pupils speak to your instructor about gaining full access for free. Once fully registered you can use the site for unlimited on-line training in both the Theory Test and the Hazard Perception test. Visit our page :-  http://shiredrive.theorytestpro.co.uk/ for more information.

Can I start from school or college?

You can start your lesson from school or college and then end up at home, providing of course that both are within our normal area.

How long is each lesson?

Lessons can be for 1 hour, 1 & 1/2 hours or 2 hours. It’s up to you. Some driving schools quote lesson prices for a 50 minute lesson. All our prices are for a full hour.

How many lessons will I need?

We are all different, so there is no easy answer to this question. The DSA say that on average it takes 45 hours of professional training to pass the driving test. In practice some people take less and some more. We will give you the training you need, but we certainly won’t persuade you to do more if it’s not necessary. We will encourage you, where possible, to practice between lessons with an experienced family member.

Will there be anyone else in the car?

No. Our training is one to one, so there won’t be anyone else sitting in on your lesson. Very occasionally our instructors are observed for quality control purposes.  However, you will be asked well in advance if this is acceptable to you and you are perfectly entitled to refuse.

Will I keep the same driving instructor?

Yes, most of our clients stay with the same instructor, unless there are exceptional circumstances. You can ask to be transferred to a different instructor at anytime if you wish.

What happens if I don't get on with my instructor?

You can talk to the ShireDrive office, and we will do our best to place you with another instructor as soon as possible.

How do I pay for my driving lessons?

If you decide to pay for one lesson at a time, then you can give cash or a cheque directly to your instructor. (Please ask your instructor if he/she is prepared to accept cheques)

If you are paying for a block of lessons, you can pay in four ways:

  • Cash to your instructor.
  • A cheque payable to ShireDrive Ltd.
  • Online through our Make a payment page using a credit or debit card.
Can you guarantee that I will pass my driving test first time?

No, no reputable instructor or driving school can make that promise. The only way we could be sure everyone will pass first time, would be for us to give you many more lessons than necessary, and then you are likely to be paying far more than you need to.

How much will my practical test cost?

You pay the DSA the current test fee when you book your test. The fee will depend on whether you want a test during normal hours (Monday to Friday) or if you want to take the test out side normal hours say in the evening, at the weekend or on a bank holiday. The fee is greater for out of hours tests. Please take care to book through the Government website www.gov.uk/book-practical-driving-test,  other sites may charge you extra for the service and it is rarely worth paying more than the going fee.

If you are taking an extended test this will usually cost twice the normal fee.

However, you will also need to pay for your instructor  to cover the time taken to practice before the test, then get to the test centre and undertake the test, the instructor will normally drive you back home after test. This is normally 2 hours. If travelling to a test centre further away, you may need to pay extra to cover the additional time. ShireDrive instructors will only charge you the same rate that you pay for normal lessons.

Typically the total cost will be approximately £112. (£62.00 to the DSA and £50.00 to your instructor) Your instructor will be able to advise you of the current costs.

How do I book my Practical Driving Test?

Follow the link below – please be careful, there are a number of disreputable sites which charge fees well in-excess of the fees charged by the Driving Standards Agency. Please remember to enter your driving instructors ADI reference number as this helps to ensure he will be available for the test times you are offered. Always confirm the time and date with your instructor as soon as possible after booking it.
